VISITING GUANAJUATO, MEXICO

to the state capital of Guanajuato has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is a charming colonial city situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra de Guanajuato. His nickname , " place of frogs " , is that for the first inhabitants of the city , in the form of its hilly terrain was similar to that of a frog. This region is known as the Bajio , or the heart of Mexico . Founded in 1559 , Guanajuato is a city home to the La Valenciana mine . Silver was first discovered in Guanajuato in the mid- seventeenth century .

The Valenciana was explored a century later and quickly became one of the richest and most productive mines in the world. The Templo de San Cayetano , located to the side of the site, was erected as a monument to wealth and the wealth extracted from the mine. The historic center of Guanajuato has a distinctly European flavor , with hundreds of cobbled streets up and down the slope. The tree-lined squares are full of outdoor cafes , museums , theaters , markets and historical monuments. The buildings of the city are an excellent example of colonial architecture

Neo-classical and Baroque style . A network of underground tunnels running beneath the
city to help control traffic flow . Known as the cradle of the Independence of Mexico , this city is an important stop along the Route of Independence, which also happens to Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende. Walk the Alhóndiga a landmark building located in the city center , and the site where there was the first great victory over the Spanish in 1810. Guanajuato is a city of legends and legendary places .

One of the best known is the famous Callejon del Beso , so narrow a place where couples can kiss from opposite balconies . Among the favorite local dishes are the enchiladas ( tortillas stuffed with meat, beans or cheese and topped with a guajillo chile sauce and chile ancho ) and pacholas Guanajuato ( spiced ground beef ) . You can also enjoy incredible views from the heights of the city and surrounding mountains and valleys of the state of Guanajuato as you slip in a hang glider or travel aboard a hot air balloon basket . You need to bring a sweater as the weather in Guanajuato is very pleasant throughout the year , but the nights can be chilly
